Elon Musk has picked a side in the AI-versus-SI naming debate. In a burst of posts on X in the early hours of Sunday, October 4, 2026, the SpaceX and Tesla chief declared the end of “AI” and confirmed his artificial intelligence company will be renamed SpaceXSI.

What Musk posted

According to multiple reports, the sequence went like this:

  1. “No more AI.”
  2. “SI.”
  3. “It’s better.”
  4. “SpaceX is a super intelligence company.”

When another user asked whether that meant SpaceXAI would be renamed SpaceXSI, Musk replied: “Yes, we will make that change.”

The posts came five days after President Trump signed an executive order directing federal agencies to replace “artificial intelligence” and “AI” with “Super Intelligence” and “SI.” Musk is the most prominent tech leader so far to adopt the new term for his own company. From xAI to SpaceXAI to SpaceXSI

The name change is the third identity for Musk’s AI venture in under a year:

When Name What happened
2023 xAI Musk founds his AI company, best known for the Grok chatbot.
February 2026 (acquired) SpaceX acquires xAI in an all-stock deal.
July 2026 SpaceXAI The unit officially adopts the SpaceXAI name and a new logo.
October 2026 SpaceXSI (announced) Musk says it will be renamed to reflect “super intelligence.”

What we still don’t know

Musk’s posts were short, and several practical questions remain open:

  • Timing. No date has been given for the switch.
  • Legal vs. branding. It’s unclear whether this is a formal legal renaming or just a public brand.
  • Products and accounts. There’s no word on whether the @SpaceXAI account on X will change its handle, or how products like Grok will be labeled.

We’ll update this article when any of these are confirmed.

Why Musk is a natural fit for “SI”

For Musk, the word superintelligence isn’t new. He has talked about AI surpassing humans for years and has made aggressive predictions about when it will happen. At the World Economic Forum in Davos in January 2026, he said AI could be smarter than any single human by the end of 2026, or no later than the following year, and smarter than all of humanity combined by around 2030 or 2031.

Those forecasts are among the most aggressive from any major tech figure, and many researchers consider them unlikely. But they explain why “super intelligence” fits Musk’s view of where the technology is heading, even if today’s systems are not yet superintelligent by the standard definition. (See where Musk’s forecast sits on our superintelligence timeline.)

It is also a reversal of tone for someone who, a decade ago, was among the loudest voices warning that advanced AI could be dangerous. Musk co-founded OpenAI in 2015 partly over those concerns. Embracing the “SI” label now places him firmly alongside the administration’s pro-growth framing of the technology.

What it means for the AI-to-SI shift

One company renaming itself doesn’t change a whole industry’s vocabulary, but Musk’s reach is enormous. His endorsement does three things:

  • It moves “SI” from government jargon to brand language. Until now the term lived mostly in federal documents. A household-name company adopting it makes it more likely to stick.
  • It pressures rivals to choose. Other AI labs now face a question they didn’t have last month: keep saying “AI,” or follow the government and Musk to “SI.”
  • It blurs an important line. Researchers use “superintelligence” for a future, far more capable form of AI. As companies apply the term to today’s products, it will be harder for the public to tell current AI from that future possibility.

That last point is why we explain the difference on every page of this site. For the basics, start with What is super intelligence?

The bottom line

Elon Musk has embraced the government’s new language: “No more AI. SI.” SpaceXAI is set to become SpaceXSI, though the timing and details are still unannounced. Whether the rest of the industry follows will decide if “SI” becomes the new normal or remains a political label.

Frequently asked questions

What did Elon Musk say about super intelligence?

In posts on X on October 4, 2026, Musk wrote “No more AI,” followed by “SI” and “It’s better,” then “SpaceX is a super intelligence company.” He confirmed SpaceXAI would be renamed SpaceXSI.

What is SpaceXSI?

SpaceXSI is the planned new name for SpaceXAI, the artificial intelligence unit of SpaceX formed after SpaceX acquired xAI. “SI” stands for Super Intelligence.

When will SpaceXAI become SpaceXSI?

Musk has not given a date. He also has not said whether it will be a legal name change or a branding update, or whether the company’s @SpaceXAI account on X will change its handle.

When does Elon Musk think AI will be smarter than humans?

At Davos in January 2026, Musk said AI could be smarter than any single human by the end of 2026, or no later than 2027, and smarter than all of humanity combined by around 2030–2031. These are predictions, not established facts.
